Loire valley wine route

Part of UNESCO World Heritage listed Sites, the Loire Valley is the third biggest producer of AOC* (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) wines in France. Among all of them, the Chinon AOC covers almost 2300 ha spread out along the River Vienne until its confluence with the Loire River.

Chinon is mainly renowned for its red wine, almost exclusively made from the Cabernet Franc grape, also called ‘Breton’ in the area. Rosé (made from Cabernet Franc as well) and white wines (from Chenin Blanc), of lesser production but of high quality, are becoming more and more recognised.

And, with more than 200 winegrowers, each wine is unique !

Wine connoisseur? Casual wine drinker?

Do come and visit the producers. They will be delighted to meet you, and share their passion.

You can go directly to a winegrower’s estate (telephone ahead first) or visit a tourist wine cellar (a list is available at the Tourist Office in Chinon).

'Vineyards and discoveries' Chinon-Bourgueil-Azay

Our territory of Chinon-Bourgueil-Azay received the “Vineyards and Discoveries” label in 2010. This quality label created by the Maison de la France and is a promise of good hospitality in wine tourism.

This label made possible the interaction between all the prominent players within tourism : heritage, leisure, accommodation… and the winegrowers of

the area (Chinon, Bourgueil, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Touraine Azay-le-Rideau) to ensure a high quality reception and a warm welcome.

What is an AOC ?

The AOC concept is based on associating an area of land with one or several grape varieties and specific know-how. It is this original combination that gives the wines their characteristics which cannot be reproduced elsewhere, as they are not transportable to another place.
